The Masters Programme prepares international students for Masters study. This course is suitable for international students who already have the equivalent of a good undergraduate degree, but who need to improve their ability to use English for academic study.

PROGRAMME AIMS

By studying the Masters Programme you will:

• make effective use of English for academic purposes, as well as for inter-personal and social purposes;

• develop study skills for learning in different modes at postgraduate level;

• take an undergraduate course unit in the subject you wish to pursue at postgraduate level. This provides you with the opportunity to develop understanding and become familiar with your chose discipline;

• become familiar with the academic and social environment of your chosen area.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The programme consists of the following four elements:

1. English Language and Academic Skills
A main focus of the course is English language development and study skills. There are compulsory courses and classes according to their profile.

2. Academic Study
In Terms 1 and 2 students take an academic unit (or two half-units).Wherever possible, the academic course unit chosen will be relevant to the areas of academic interest students wish to pursue at postgraduate level. These course units are taught specifically and they are offered as Completing a full academic unit (or two half-units) provides students with substantial experience in academic study in the context. The practice in listening to lectures, taking part in seminars and completing all assessment is invaluable in preparing for postgraduate study. Assessment for this unit may be an exam, coursework, or a combination of both.

3. Independent Project
As the programme progresses, students identify a topic to investigate in some depth, and prepare a 6,000 to 8,000 word extended academic essay on this topic. Regular one-to-one guidance and coaching is provided by an English language tutor.
Preparing this project enables students to acquire most of the key skills needed to write a Master's or Phd´s level thesis in English.

4. Consultations and Independent Learning
Each student has a regular one-to-one consultation with a personal tutor which develops and consolidates language leaning and overall academic progress. As part of their preparation for postgraduate study, students are encouraged to direct their own learning and make good use of independent learning during their studies.

On successful completion of this programme, you will be able to:

• communicate in academic and professional English to a level that enables you to effectively participate in a postgraduate degree.

• develop necessary study skills and knowledge in your chosen academic subject.

• locate, analyse and critically evaluate academic sources, both paper-based and electronic;

• construct evidence-based argument and present this in a coherent and cohesive manner in writing with due acknowledgement of sources;

• organise your studies efficiently and work independently;

Length of Study

The amount of time required to complete the program satisfactorily depends on many factors--the student’s English proficiency when starting in the program, the attitude of the student, and the student’s previous experience with English. In general, students can expect to study for twelve months.
