Academic Pathway Programme – Preparatório para universidades

Content

Sessional Academic English language programmes offer preparation in English language and study skills to international students.

The first two parts of this programme are designed to improve students' overall competence in English language and develop general academic skills in reading extended texts, writing essays, listening to lectures, speaking and study skills. From The Third part of the programme students will have subjects specifically designed to prepare for specific professional/academic fields.

Classes are designed to meet the needs of students who do not speak English as a first language. The class takes a blended learning approach (face-to-face plus online work) and provides essential practice in both language and literacy skills, closely following the content of academic area lectures and core reading texts. Particular attention is given to lecture comprehension; vocabulary building; reading with the aim of identifying key arguments and author’s attitudes; writing that is accurate and cohesive; and building oral fluency.

All three parts of the programme will provide students with the following:

a timetable which enables students to concentrate on the core academic skills but also ensures there is time for independent study which is an important aspect of university level study in any subject.

BY THE END OF THE SESSIONAL ACADEMIC ENGLISH YOU SHOULD:

• have a greater understanding and a working knowledge of the key skills and the language required for successful University entry.
• have developed strategies for independent learning;
• have improved your level of English;

Asssesment

There are three elements of assessment on the Sessional Academic English Programme:

1. An essay on a given title. Postgraduate students need to write around 2000 words, and undergraduate students need to write around 1500 words. A reading list will be provided for you.

2. An oral presentation. You will be asked to deliver an individual presentation lasting five minutes, based on research.

3. Discussion skills. You will be assessed on your ability to contribute discussions throughout the programme.
