What does the CELTA involve?
When you take the CELTA course you learn the principles of effective teaching and acquire a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners. The CELTA has both theory and practice sessions, and thus gives you lots of hands-on teaching practice which helps you build your confidence as a teacher. During the practical sessions you will be observed by experienced trainers who will give you feedback on your teaching as well as clear ideas on how to improve your teaching techniques.
The CELTA focuses on five main areas:
- Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
- Language analysis and awareness
- Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
- Planning and resources for different contexts
- Developing teaching skills and professionalism
How will I be assessed?
There is no final examination. Trainees are graded and assessed by the trainers on a continuous basis. An external assessor, will visit the course in its later stages to ‘moderate’ the assessment.
There are two components of assessment, each of which must be passed in order to qualify for the certificate:
- Teaching Practice – You will teach for a total of 6 hours, teaching classes at two levels of ability. Assessment is based on your overall performance.
- Written Assignments – You will complete four written assignments which focus on the main areas of the syllabus.
Can I take the CELTA?
In order to apply for the course you should:
- Have a standard of English which will enable you to teach at a range of levels (equivalent to CAE level – C1-CEF – although you do not need to have the certificate)
- Be aged 20 or over
- Have a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education
